Respite care

Respite care at home in Louisville, KY — so the one who does everything can rest.

Caring for a spouse or a parent takes everything you have, and it does not come with days off. Respite care puts an experienced caregiver in your place — for a standing afternoon, a week away, or the overnight hours — on a schedule you set. Hallmark Homecare is a referral agency: we present the candidates, you choose, and the caregiver works for you.

“Shane was absolutely so easy to work with and all of the caregivers we had were the best. They were very encouraging and gave me a peace of mind so I could work… Someone helping you in a stressful time and being so attentive to your loved one means the world.”

Why families choose us for respite

A break you can actually take.

A schedule that fits your life

A standing weekday so you can work or keep your own appointments. A week of coverage so you can travel. Overnights so you can sleep. You set the hours — and change them as life changes.

The same caregiver, returning

Because you engage the caregiver directly, the same familiar face can come back week after week — someone your loved one knows, who notices a change and lets you know. Higher continuity of care, even while you are away.

Experienced caregivers, chosen by you

We present seasoned caregivers with their background and experience; you interview and choose who steps in for you. They work for you, not us — and you decide whether to continue, at any time, for any reason.

“Rest is not a luxury for a family caregiver. It is how the care keeps going.”

What respite can look like

A few hours, a few nights, or a whole week.

Every week

A standing day

The same caregiver, the same afternoon each week — so you can work, see your own doctor, meet a friend, or simply be somewhere else for a few hours knowing your loved one is in familiar hands.

A trip

A week away

A wedding, a vacation, a grandchild’s graduation. Days, overnights, or around the clock while you are gone — a small, steady team, so your loved one sees the same few faces all week.

After dark

The overnight hours

An awake caregiver keeping watch, or one who rests but is there if needed — so the spouse who has been up every night can finally sleep. 24-hour and overnight care →

When it can’t wait

When you are the one who is sick

The family caregiver gets the flu, has a procedure, or simply hits the wall. Call and tell us — a real person answers days, nights and weekends, and we will be straight with you about how quickly we can present candidates.

Who does what

Hallmark facilitates. Your family decides.

What we do

Hallmark

We answer the phone — a real person, days, nights and weekends — recruit and screen experienced caregivers, present candidates whose experience and availability fit the hours you need, and help coordinate getting started, scheduling tools, weekly billing and year-end tax forms.

What you do

Your family

You interview and choose the caregiver, and engage them directly — the caregiver works for you, not us. You set the hours, the tasks and the routine, and direct the day-to-day care, with your nurse or care manager if you have one. We do not assess your loved one or write a plan of care.

Long-distance family

“Hallmark has helped my brother and I care for our mother on numerous occasions, and particularly excel when we do not have a family member or caregiver that we can call.”

Questions families ask

Respite care, answered.

How much notice do you need for respite care?

As much as you can give, and less than you might think. Call as soon as you know the dates — a standing day, a trip, a week — and we will present candidates whose availability fits. A real person answers days, nights and weekends, and when the need is sudden, tell us: families reaching us in urgent situations have had experienced caregivers in place the same day.

Can the same caregiver come every time?

That is the goal, and it is what the model is built for. Because you engage the caregiver directly, the same person can return week after week — and a caregiver who knows your loved one is your eyes and ears while you are away. Availability is not something we can promise, but continuity is the point.

What can the caregiver do while I am away?

Whatever you do — companionship, meals, light housekeeping, medication reminders, personal care such as bathing and dressing, help with mobility, and simply being present so no one is alone. You set the tasks and the routine; the caregiver works for you. Caregivers work to their own level of competency, so tell us what the day requires and we will present candidates suited to it.

Can respite care be overnight, or around the clock?

Yes. Some families want an awake caregiver keeping watch through the night; others want a caregiver present who rests but is there if needed — you decide. For a week away, a small, steady team can cover the clock.

What if we end up needing fewer days than we booked?

Tell us, and tell the caregiver. You set the schedule and can change it as your plans change — families have done exactly that.

Can long-term care insurance help pay for respite care?

Often, yes. Hallmark Homecare is an Approved Provider with John Hancock for long-term care insurance, and many other long-term care policies reimburse care from a caregiver you engage through Hallmark. We take care of the provider side — our approved-provider status, the provider forms your carrier asks us for, and the paid invoices you submit; understanding your own policy and working with your carrier stay with you.
