Most families who call about nights want someone awake — and that is what an overnight caregiver usually is. Some families call it a night sitter. One caregiver stays one 12-hour shift, evening to morning, so the face your loved one sees at 3 a.m. is the same one who said goodnight.

A day has two 12-hour shifts. With caregivers you engage directly on 12-hour shifts, a small team can cover every hour — the same few people, returning.
That can be as few as four caregivers — two on days and two on nights. Often it is a few more, so there is room for days off and backup. It depends on availability and isn't something we can promise. What doesn't change: you interview and choose every caregiver on the team, you set the schedule, and the caregivers work for you, not us.

When a caregiver can't make a shift, another caregiver already on your team often picks it up, with your OK — usually sorted out between you and the team. If no one on the team can, call us, and we present available caregivers for you to choose from. Coverage isn't something we can promise, but a team you chose is the best backup there is.

An ICU discharge on a Friday. 24-hour care that night.
A Louisville man was discharged from the ICU and needed 24-hour care to come home — starting that night. His family called several highly rated agencies that Friday morning; two went to voicemail and none called back. They called Hallmark at 8 a.m., and by noon the family had engaged a caregiver for that night. Through the weekend they chose experienced caregivers for days and nights. We recruit and screen experienced caregivers, present candidates whose experience and availability fit the nights or hours you need, answer the phone — a real person, days, nights and weekends — and help coordinate getting started, weekly billing and year-end tax forms.
You
You interview and choose the caregivers, set the schedule, and direct the day-to-day care — with your nurse or care manager, who own the plan of care. The caregivers work for you, not us, and you decide whether to continue at any time, for any reason. We do not assess your loved one or write the plan of care.
What overnight and 24/7 care cost.
There is no package price. You pay each caregiver the hourly rate you agree with them, for the hours you set, so the number is simply hours multiplied by the rate. An overnight is one 12-hour shift; 24/7 care is every hour of the week. Our fee is separately stated. When needs change, the hours change with them.
Many long-term care policies reimburse care from a caregiver you engage through Hallmark. We complete the provider forms your carrier asks us for, and make sure the paid invoices your carrier needs are produced each week — the claim stays yours.

Many 24/7 calls come in the day a parent is discharged from one of the city's hospitals, or from an inpatient rehab such as Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital on Bluegrass Parkway. Hospitals are named only as places families come home from; Hallmark Homecare is a referral agency and is not affiliated with any hospital or health system. Families in Southern Indiana, Oldham and Shelby counties and Frankfort call the same number.

Is an overnight caregiver awake?
Usually, yes — most families ask for an awake caregiver, and that is what we present most often. If your loved one sleeps soundly and only needs someone in the house, you can choose a caregiver who rests through the night instead. You decide, and you choose a caregiver comfortable with it.
Is an overnight caregiver the same as a night sitter?
Many families use the words the same way: someone in the home through the night, so a loved one is not alone and the family can sleep. Caregivers work to their own level of competency, so tell us what the nights involve — bathroom help, repositioning, wandering — and we present caregivers experienced with it.
How many caregivers does 24/7 care take?
It depends on the hours and on availability, and it isn't something we can promise. With 12-hour shifts, a small team can cover the whole week — sometimes as few as four caregivers, two on days and two on nights, and often a few more so there is room for days off and backup. Either way, it is far fewer faces than a large rotating group.
What happens if a caregiver can't make a shift?

What’s the difference between 24-hour care and live-in care?
